Designing for mobile devices - simplifying navigation

The first thing that you will need to look at in order to make your website work on mobile devices is your navigation buttons. If, like many websites, your navigation buttons have grown in number and complexity, it's time to reevaluate. And this will not only help your website work better on mobile devices, it will help your website work better overall.

If you now have twenty-seven, or even seventeen navigation buttons on your website, that is way too much. There was a time, a few years ago, when this made sense. Now you need to go back to some pretty basic principles of Graphic Design.

To make an analogy, think of using an elevator in a department store. You don't have the time, or the inclination, to read a list of absolutely everything that's on that floor when you get on the elevator. Each floor needs a simple label, such as men's wear, household, that sort of thing. When you get off the elevator, there should be a sign showing you how the floor is divided up. On the men's wear floor, there would be suits, casual wear, shoes, etc. And that's how websites need to be redesigned these days.

Go look at your website home page. If it were an elevator, would you know which button to push? Or is there so much that you can't find anything?

That's where you start.
