Is your Adobe Illustrator file editable?

If you have requested an Adobe Illustrator file, the first thing that you need to check is that it is in editable vector format. If it is, it's vector (which is what you requested), if not, it is in raster, and will just be an uneditable chunk.

To check the file go to View>Outline. There you should see the vector shapes, which just looks like a thin wireframe. If all you see is a big X, there is no vector information there. By the way, Outline is a toggle, it goes to Preview and then back to Outline. In Preview a raster and a vector image look the same. They don't act the same, so be sure it's vector. If you are trying to vectorize an image using Live Trace, don't forget to expand the paths!
