Should you write a blog?
You should write a blog if
• You enjoy expressing yourself. If you're the kind of person who would normally bore your friends with your esoteric interest in, for example, butterflies, go ahead and start writing about that Lepidoptera! Butterfly enthusiasts will love reading about it, and your friends will appreciate not hearing you go on and on about it.
• You have a service business and are trying to attract more customers. Sure, you've got a great website, but it's really just static. To let people know that you are moving, write some blog posts. Write about how well your company is growing, services you offer. This is just good public relations (P.R.). If you hate writing, or don't have time for it, hire someone who can do it for you.
• You would like to help people. There are millions of people who would love to hear some encouragement from you, on whatever subject you are struggling with. You have to be careful with this one, this is all about showing a little bit of your soul. For some people, this is cathartic. Personally, I write a blog about my recovery after my accident, called Graceful Movement.
You should not write a blog if you are mostly interested in privacy. Publishing to the web, along with publishing a book, magazine, or newspaper, is about exposure. Once you put yourself out there, you are opening yourself up to criticism. Chances are very good that the only people who will read your blog will be one or two of your friends, but just in case someone else sees it, better safe than sorry.
