What is kerning?

If you are a graphic designer, you know what kerning is. If, for some reason, you are presenting yourself as a graphic designer, and you don't know what kerning is, well, you might as well spray-paint *amateur* all over your portfolio. Yes, it's that obvious to the pros.

Kerning refers to the precise position of letters in relationship to each other. It's easier shown than explained. In the cartoon, the kerning is incorrect between the C and E of Offices. Actually, it tends to be less noticeable when using all upper-case letters as when using lower-case letters.

Kerning is one of the things that we always emphasized at The Art Institute of Phoenix. If your kerning isn't right, all of the cool Photoshop special effects and everything else you do is wasted. Kerning is just one of the many things that separates the amateurs from the pros in Graphic Design.

And I didn't hate the people that I taught kerning to, I loved to see their work!
