Why you shouldn't abbreviate when writing blog posts

Writing a blog post is like writing for advertising. If you make it difficult for people to read and understand quickly, they will simply look away. And one of the worst mistakes that you can make is to abbreviate.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but really, writing is about good communication. And while abbreviating may make writing easier for you, and shorten the length of a blog post, it's just another barrier to communication. Here is an example:

e.g., FWIW, write your posts ASAP.

For example, for what it's worth, write your posts as soon as possible.

So which line did your eye go to? For most people, it would be the second one, even though it's longer. That's because when we read stuff, we tend to be lazy. There may be a time and place for figuring out cryptic messages, but never in advertising, and never on a blog post.

And there you go. Do a little extra work to make your blog posts easier to read.
