Why waiting for a web page page to load for just a few seconds is so annoying

If you've ever been annoyed at how long it takes a page to load on the web, or how long it takes for something to respond on your Smart Phone, you may have heard people to tell you to relax. What's a few seconds?

But I disagree with these people, and I agree with you. And all you have to do is to compare it to the time that anyone would allow for the turning of a page in a book. Three seconds? Two seconds? It's actually such a small amount of time I'm sure that I would never be able to measure the time between going to turn a page in a book, and being annoyed at the darn thing.

It's not a personality flaw to be impatient with a device that doesn't respond right away. When you go to open a door, how long would you wait for it to start opening? Even if you're not carrying a bag of groceries, you would pretty much want the door to start opening right away. Being made to stand there for two or three seconds would be very annoying.

So there you go. If you're wondering why you are so annoyed by having to wait a few seconds, don't worry, it's not you. It's all of us.
